Born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York City, Anne Jacqueline Hathaway is the daughter of Gerald Hathaway, a lawyer, and Kate McCauley, an actress. Raised in Millburn, New Jersey, Hathaway's early exposure to the arts came from her mother, who inspired her to pursue acting. She made her acting debut in the short-lived television series Get Real (1999–2000), which led to her breakthrough role as Mia Thermopolis in Disney's The Princess Diaries (2001). The film's success catapulted her into stardom, earning her nominations for Best Breakthrough Performance at the MTV Movie Awards.
