Matthew William Goode, born on April 3, 1978, in Exeter, Devon, England, is an accomplished English actor known for his versatility across television and film. He was born to Anthony Goode, a geologist, and Jennifer Goode, a nurse and amateur theatre director. Matthew is the youngest of five children, with a mix of brothers and a half-sister, who is television presenter Sally Meen. Growing up in a creative family, he developed an early interest in acting, which led him to pursue studies at the University of Birmingham, where he studied drama.

Matthew Goode began his acting career in 2002, debuting in the ABC television film Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. However, it was his role in the romantic comedy Chasing Liberty (2004) that marked his breakthrough. In this film, Goode starred alongside Mandy Moore and was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Choice Breakout Movie Star – Male.
